In non-academic hospital practices, precepting presents multiple challenges. Midwives are bombarded daily with requests to precept students. Midwifery managers often set arbitrary parameters. In this panel discussion, the participants discuss the clinical-academic partnership concept, share how a hospital-based midwifery practice developed a business model that integrates precepting into a non-academic hospital practice, and present a case study for discussion. Kathleen Donaldson at ACCLAIM Nurse-Midwives in Fort Worth, Texas is committed to educating students as part of the work of midwifery. She takes 3 SNMs for their entire clinical time and bases her decision on selecting the right students. This innovative perspective enhances the ability to manage multiple students in the practice with her approach, including scheduling and precepting students from both MSN & BSN-DNP programs, students at different levels, etc.
